2nd October - Zadar, Croatia

 We woke up in Zadar and went up to the top deck to take a look at the port. We met Veronica and Steven in the Lido for breakfast and then walked off the ship catch a shuttle bus into the city.

The shuttle bus dropped us off just near the sea organ which was playing a loud tune as the water was quite choppy. Next we walk towards the forum which is the main square that has some Roman ruins. The huge church on the edge of the forum called Saint Donatus has many fallen columns and marble slabs in  foundations. We made it inside before the lady was there to collect the €3.50 fee. It is in quite a state of disrepair.

We wondered around the streets and stopped in at the shop to purchase a Croatian flag. We also stopped at a little cafe bar and bought coffee and hot chocolate.
We tried to find the Spinx which was the site of a grave but stumbled upon one of the city gates instead. We split up with Steven here and Veronica David and I decided to walk around the city walls.

Back on the ship we had lunch by the poolside having tacos nachos and margaritas even though it was Wednesday. After lunch we went to the Rollingstone lounge to see the movie the da Vinci code. After the movie had finished, the captain made an announcement over the PA system that we would be making our way speedily to Trieste. This was because They are expecting strong cyclonic type winds The next morning and wanted to be there before they arrived. Because of this news we had a quick drink in the billboard on board and then David and I went for our first walk around the promenade deck. Then we got dressed and met for pre-dinner drinks at the pinnacle bar before our specialty dining experience in the pinnacle grill.





Dinner was delicious. We went to the main stage to watch the performance, but the dancing didn’t appeal so we decided to head back to our room to watch a movie which was Bridget Jones’s diary.

 Our itinerary for the next 6 weeks of travel. This will be our first time in Greece, Croatia and Albania, so 3 new flags to add to our collection.  We are flying Emirates via Dubai to Athens then plan to get a train to Piraeus port. Blue star ferry from Piraeus to Paros, Paros to Santorini and Santorini to Naxos. Fast ferries from Naxos to Mykonos and Mykonos to Athens. Our trip to Delos while on Mykonos will be on the regular ferry. Once back on the mainland we have 4 nights in Athens where we will be staying in the Monastiraki area with our Athens City Pass in hand to visit the main archaeological sites. Then we are off on a tour : The Grand classical tour of Greece including Mani and Monemvasia. Next we meet up with my sister Veronica and her husband Steven for an 11 night cruise on the Ionian and Adriatic seas.

31st August and 1st September - Dubai to Athens and Piraeus to Paros

 We had a good flight to Dubai, if you can call a 14 hour flight good! We arrived at 4:25am and wandered around terminal 1 for a while before deciding we would head to terminal 3 to be closer to where we were leaving from. We used our airport lounge passes at Ahlan which was a good idea as there were not that many people there and it had a 3 hour maximum time rather than the 2 hour maximum at Marhaba. Our 10:50am flight was delayed by 30 minutes but we ended up making the time up on the flight to Athens. The Dubai to Athens flight was even better than our first leg as there was no turbulence at all and it was only 5 hours.  It was a breeze getting through passport control and picking up our checked bags. We set off for the train station to get to Piraeus. The lady at the ticket counter was very helpful and was very happy when we told her this was our first time in Greece. 30th August 2024: Off we go

 It was quite nice to have an evening departure as we had the day to do some last minute gardening and catch up with Chris and Percy. We left home and walked up the street to catch a bus to Sutherland, then a train to Hurstville changing for another train to Rockdale and finally a bus to the airport. A total cost of $4.94 each. It was funny to see that the queue to check in for people who had already completed online check in was 3 times as long as the full check in line! Next time I will not bother with online check in especially if like this time we had already paid to choose our seats. With plenty of time to spare we wandered around the duty free shop and pre purchase our alcohol to pick up on our return. We had a pre departure start of the holiday drink at the Peroni bar before boarding the plane.
