2nd September - Walking the Byzantine road and a bit more
Another 5:30am start, no rest for the wicked! We were at the bus stop well before the scheduled departure time of 7:30 so we had time to work out how to get tickets from the ticket machine. There was only one other passenger besides David and I when the bus departed. The 20 minute ride to Lefkes was scenic with great views of the countryside including terraced hills and olive groves. When we arrived in Lefkes and alighted the bus we found that none of the cafés were open so we started our walk wandering through the small alleyways on our way to the start of the Byzantine road.
We enjoyed the 6km walk to Prodromos, the marble stones reminded us of the Inca trail we did back in 2008. Glad we got an early start as it was heating up to the high 20°s.
At Prodromos all the cafes were closed but we enjoyed looking through the cute little town and stopped to have some water and a muesli bar. We managed to find a bakery on the main road and stopped for iced coffee/chocolate and some tasty treats.
We kept walking to the coast and the small beach at Logaras where we enjoyed a Nymφh beer to quench our thirst. We then cooled off in the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea. We stayed in for around an hour then headed up to one of the beach restaurants for lunch of Greek salad and stuffed vine leaves with a lemon sauce.
We managed to get tickets for the return bus trip at the mini mart, the bus was on time arriving at 3:15pm. The bus was much busier on the return journey. Once back in Parikia we headed back to our hotel to shower and freshen up before setting off to a beachside restaurant for sunset drinks and dinner.
A perfect end to a great day.
