5th September - Transfer to Santorini

When we woke we showered, packed our bags, had breakfast and checked out of the hotel by 10am. We would definitely recommend Hotel Eleftheria as a place to stay It was only a short walk to the main square in Parikia and all the waterfront dining options but it was also quiet.

Our ferry to Santorini was due to arrive at 11:25am, but ended up being 15 minutes late. We had another smooth ride with a stop at Naxos on the way. We made sandwiches from the ingredients we purchased at the supermarket which was great as they have virtually nothing I can eat at the shop onboard. They ended up catching up 5 minutes so we were only 10 minutes late in the end. It was very exciting as we sailed into the caldera and caught our first glimpse of Oia and the steps and cable car up to Fira.

Disembarkation was a bit of a shimozzle with everyone trying to get their bags from the storage racks. Once off the ferry we had no problem finding our transfer as he had our name on a placard along with another couples name, unfortunately he had their name wrong but eventually they found him and we set off on our slow journey up the cliff side behind a fully laden semi trailer.

The pictures do not capture the incredible beauty of Santorini. This has to be the most beautiful place we have visited. We are so lucky to have found this apartment to stay at and for such a reasonable price. David commented that the hotel we stayed at in Ilanz in Switzerland last year cost more per night and it didn’t even have air conditioning let alone a kitchen and a stunning view!

Our room for the next couple of days

We drank in the view for a while before heading back out to the local shops to buy some provisions. We noticed a few weddings taking place in hotels along the caldera rim. What a stunning backdrop for wedding photos. We also saw a lady having a “flying dress photo shoot” the cost was upward of €280 for 1 hour! We saw her in a red flying dress on our way to the shops and at the blue door in a blue dress on our way back.

We enjoyed the rest of the evening sitting on our balcony overlooking the caldera, the twinkling lights of Oia in the distance. We didn’t want to leave so ended up getting takeaway from Ilios bakery sharing a Greek salad and Mousaka.
